POINTS TO PONDER
Issue # 02-09

From your Federation President

NARFE Members of California

California Federation NARFE-NET

As I meet and talk to more and more NARFE members, I'm somewhat surprised
when I find someone who is not aware that we have a NARFE-NET, wherein one can
receive e-mail concerning Federation and National issues. Thus, I'm forwarding the
following in hopes that chapters will include this in their newsletters in order to reach
members who do not normally attend meetings.

The California State Federation of Chapters (CSFC) NARFE-NET is a voluntary
electronic communications network serving all California members enrolled.
NARFE-NET Coordinators distribute messages and information from many sources
including: Region VIII National Field Vice President, CSFC President, Standing
Committee Chairs, Special Assistants to the President, District Vice Presidents and
Chapter Presidents and other sources, when they have important information to share
with Federation members.

At this time, (944) members in California are enrolled on NARFE-NET and about
2,500 are enrolled on the Global Electronic Messaging System (GEMS) operated by
the National Office under a contract with Information Services Incorporated (ISI).

The obvious advantages of these two online mass mailing systems are:
(1) Rapid communication; (2) Provides a written record, which can be further
distributed as needed; (3) Distribution includes all members enrolled on the Net
(not limited to chapter officers); (4) Chapter NARFE-NET Coordinators provide a
responsible person to disseminate important information to specific positions, i.e.,
President, Legislative Chairs, Newsletter Editor, Public Relations Officer, Service
Officer, etc..

   The requirements for enrollment on NARFE-NET are: (1) Active NARFE membership;
(2) Must have e-mail address; (3) Must notify Federation Coordinators, Don Ross
RoSvc@aol.com with a cc: to Kathy Ericksen kathyeri@aol.com with full name, e-mail
address and chapter assigned. To terminate service, simply make notification to either
coordinator. Members must also notify the coordinator (s) if their e-mail address changes
in order to avoid disruption in service.

Currently, we are experiencing duplication on some messages, because GEMS will not
share their member e-mail addresses with NARFE-NET. To eliminate this problem, let
Don or Kathy know whether you're receiving duplicate messages or you are not getting
Federation or NARFE Headquarters distribution.

Please be advised that NARFE-NET Coordinators do not distribute Virus or Hoax
messages, nor do they distribute politically biased messages or personal opinions. Also,
be assured that your personal information is safeguarded and will not be sold or shared
with commercial organizations or persons unless they have a need-to-know, i.,e., District
Vice Presidents, Federation Officers.

The Federation is proud to announce that all CSFC Executive Board Members have
e-mail addresses and fax capability. In addition, (101) chapters have designated
NARFE-NET Coordinators, and all (8) Standing Committee Chairs, and all (15) Special
Assistants to the Federation President participate online with NARFE-NET. This
wide-ranging participation by key personnel in California provides a convenient and
efficient communication network to keep our officers and members informed on current
information, issues of great interest, and helps to meet the goals and objectives of the
organization.

NARFE -NET Coordinators provide a point of contact and information resource for
members and non-members alike. They provide assistance and cooperate with the
Federation and National Webmasters to register chapter websites and post notices or
information as needed. If you have questions about this matter, please contact the
appropriate coordinators as listed above.

If you or members of your chapter are not currently enrolled on NARFE-NET, I
encourage everyone to do so. It will cost you nothing, and I believe you will find it
enjoyable and informative.

Till next Time
Lea D. Zajac, your California Federation President
