POINTS TO PONDER
Issue 01-07
from your Federation President
NARFE Members of California:
PROTECT MEMBER'S PERSONAL DATA: The names, addresses, telephone
number, fax number and e-mail addresses of NARFE members are for use within the
NARFE organization and are not to be distributed to individuals or organizations
outside of our association unless specifically authorized by the NARFE member.
When Chapter Officers are installed and take the Oath of Office, one of the
phrases stated in the oath is, "... you will properly safeguard all books, papers and
other property of the Association that comes into your possession while in office ...".
Books, papers, records, etc. includes members' personal data. In fact, all members,
not just the Officers, are expected to safeguard personal data, otherwise one could be
in violation of the "Privacy Act".
The M112 computer printout which is published monthly and the M114 computer
printout which is published semi-annually are both provided to each Chapter and to the
Federation Executive Board Officers. These printouts list the names, addresses and
telephone numbers of all the NARFE members and are for NARFE use only. When
these printouts are no longer needed and are to be tossed, they should be destroyed by
shredding, burning or torn into small pieces.
However, it should be recognized that members who are elected to offices on the
Federation Executive Board essentially give up this anonymity in the pursuit of
advancing the cause of NARFE. In so doing, they make their personal data available
to Congressional Offices, Health Organizations, Insurance Organizations and any other
organization that may ultimately benefit NARFE.
Till next time ...
Your California Federation President, Lea Zajac
